These bars smell lovely, and they last us longer than a bottle of shampoo! They live in our Rest & Recharge family, because lavender leans relaxing for most people, peppermint is uplifting, and spearmint likes to walk the line between. This bar is best for normal hair and scalp. Best to try them for yourself, because only you can know what is "normal" for you. To us, in this case, normal means that you love your hair and scalp as they are, and you aren't fighting with them or experiencing problems with them most days. Is that normal? Who the heck knows?! Not us, that's for sure. ;-)
We started making shampoo bars in 2019, because we were trying to do our part in reducing our use of single-use plastic. And then we started selling them because neighbors on Whidbey started asking for them. They work really well for 85% of people who purchase them, and roughly 15% of people tell us they prefer liquid shampoo. The Whidbey Lavender Mint shampoo bar was our most popular bar at the beginning!
It felt odd, at first, to use a bar instead of a bottle of liquid to shampoo with, and personally it took me three showers using the shampoo bars before I fell in love--and then I fell in love hard because my frizzy hair became more manageable and I'd finally figured out how much lather works for me and my hair and scalp had adjusted to not using chemicals anymore. Now I love the bars and can't imagine going back to a bottle. These bars can also be used as body soap.
About the plants and our relationships with them: The mint and the lavender in this bar grow here on our land just outside Langley on Whidbey. All of our shampoo bars are made with locally grown and gathered Whidbey Island plants, infused into olive oil before they become a shampoo bar or other offering. The plants are not endangered, and even so, we take only a small fraction of any stand of plant, leaving most for pollinators, wild life, and human neighbors to enjoy and lean on. We also only chose plants, herbs, and flowers known by elders and wise women to be good for both hair and scalp. Which plants call to you? We always have several shampoo bars to choose from because different plants (and people) call to us in different years. The choice is yours. Follow your intuition and heart or read up on these generous local plants and herbs before choosing.
To use: Some people rub the shampoo bar between their hands until they get enough lather and then shampoo like normal. Some people rub the bar directly onto their heads until they get enough lather, then shampoo like normal. Your choice. So simple! Goodbye plastic!
Storage and life of the bar: Store the bar where it can dry quickly and store as far away from the shower or bath faucet/downpour of water as you can. How long your bar lasts also depends on factors such as how much lather you need/like, how long and thick your hair is, how often you wash your hair, and if you use the bar as body soap too or just to shampoo with. If you store it away from a direct downpour of shower or bath water, the bar should last longer than a standard size bottle of shampoo. I
Size: Roughly 4 ounce bars. These are made by hand in small batches and hand cut by cool women, not machines. We keep anything cut smaller than 3.8 ounces for ourselves and our families and to give as gifts to neighbors in need. We're not machines, people, nor do we want to be. :-)
Ingredients: Grown on Whidbey (at Ritual Mischief where no poison spraying happens) lavender and peppermint infused into organic extra virgin olive oil, plus organic coconut oil, shea butter, castor oil, sodium hydroxide, distilled water, sodium lactate, lavender essential oil, peppermint essential oil, tiny pinch of indigo powder swirled into the top to give the bar a slight purple hue on the top. This color in the shampoo is so slight that it will not transfer to you. The indigo starts are from the lovely women of Rainy Day Nursery on Whidbey, then grown and then turned into powder by Gina in Seattle before coming to rest here. 😊
Packaging: See our Packaging page for details. If you'd prefer no packaging at all, just put that in the Comments field when you order and you'll get them bare naked.
