Humans have been living with and leaning on lavender for more than 2,500 years—talk about a loyal ally! Our friends and family members rely on this jack-of-all-trades salve for a variety of reasons. Some use it for rough patches on elbows, knees, and ankles. Some to help with minor burns, itchy insect bites, and other itchy skin relief. Some use it to soften chapped lips and cold sores. Lavender’s calming scent is also known help ease restlessness and anxiety, supporting better sleep. Daniel recently used it to heal broken skin that wasn't healing (he’d accidentally hit his shin several times in the same place, on the same piece of furniture, for several weeks in a row and his skin was REALLY pissed off about it). It worked wonders. In a pinch when I had nothing else (at a mosquito-haven of a lake we stopped at so Daniel could take photos), I used it as an insect repellent, although it wasn't formulated for that. It was definitely better than nothing!
We love lavender! Sit with lavender in your garden or in a neighbor’s garden if you can, touching her and breathing in and out for a while, just to see how her presence makes you feel. Talk to the wise elder women in your community, or in your friends’ communities, to learn about other uses, and consider visiting Lavender Wind Farm if you're on Whidbey to surround yourself with lavender and learn more about her.
