Welcome to Whidbey gift set (local soap + shampoo + salve)

by Silly Dog Studios

Welcome to Whidbey! This is a gift for anyone moving through or new to Whidbey who you'd like to feel more welcome and who you think might appreciate a soap, shampoo bar, and salve made with plants, herbs, flowers, and windfall tree branches from Whidbey:

  • Whidbey Douglas Fir & Juniper hand soap, a 3-ounce bar that contains windfall Douglas Fir branches (we gather after windstorms) and Juniper branches gifted to us by friends who had to remove a tree when doing home repairs. Full of soapy suds and the peace of the generous forest.
  • Whidbey Rosemary Mint shampoo bar, a 3-ounce bar that contains rosemary, peppermint, and spearmint grown here at Silly Dog Studios just outside of Langley. Lather, rinse, repeat!
  • A simple salve. This gift set comes with a simple salve made with one of the abundant and generous plants here on Whidbey. Choose from among the four different salves when you order. Your choices are gift set with 1) Nettle salve (good for sore/aching fingers, wrists, joints), 2) Douglas fir simple salve (relaxing scent rubs well into sore muscles), 3) Lavender simple salve (use for dry, rough skin, especially at night, before bed), or 4) Dandelion Flower simple salve (use for dry, rough skin and to brighten someone's day with the sunny disposition of dandelion flowers).

As a gift set, the products will be tucked into a Silly Dog Studios gift bag. Purchasing this $22 set saves you $7 compared to buying the products separately.

Product details...

Storage and life of the products: To extend the life of the soap and shampoo bars, store them where they can dry quickly (like on a soap drainer or folded dry washcloth) after use and where they don't get regular spray from the faucet. Unused, the soap and shampoo bars will last a very long time, likely longer than you and me. ;-) Store the salve in a cool, dark place and away from direct sunlight, which will melt it. The salve is best used within two years of purchase.

Size of soap and shampoo bars: Roughly 3-ounce bars. These are made by hand in small batches and hand cut by cool women, not machines. This means most bars are 3 ounces and that the bars can range from 2.8 ounces to 3.7 ounces, most are 3 or more. We keep anything smaller than that for ourselves and our families, to give as gifts to neighbors in need (in the past few years that was soaps to a local shelter for unhouse people and to frontline healthcare workers at Mom's memory care home), and to cut up and give as free surprises and samples to those who buy our products. We're not machines, people, nor do we want to be. :-)

Ingredients in Douglas Fir & Juniper hand soap: Whidbey windfall Douglas Fir branches and gifted Juniper branches infused into organic extra virgin olive oil, plus castor oil, sustainably sourced palm oil, coconut oil, distilled water, sodium hydroxide, sodium lactate, and fir essential oil.

Ingredients in Whidbey Rosemary Mint shampoo bar: Grown on Whidbey (at Silly Dog Studios and in friends gardens where no spraying happens) rosemary, spearmint, & peppermint infused into organic extra virgin olive oil, plus coconut oil, shea butter, castor oil, sodium hydroxide, distilled water, sodium lactate, rosemary essential oil, and peppermint essential oil.

Ingredients in the simple salves (2-ounce tin): All of our simple salves contain organic olive oil and beeswax. And, depending on which salve you choose for this gift set, it will also contain either 1) dandelion flowers, 2) lavender, 3) Douglas fir, or 4) stinging nettles--infused in the olive oil for 6 to 8 weeks and then strained out of the oil before the salve is made. The lavender salve also contains a few drops of lavender essential oil, so it smells more strongly of lavender. The others contain no essential oils and are unscented except for the scent imparted by the plants themselves into the olive oil.

Packaging: Our salves and balms come in metal, screw top, reusable tins. We wrap our soaps and shampoo bars in a small piece of food-safe, compostable parchment paper to ensure safe handling. Consider recycling the paper or, better yet, use it as a great "brown" in your compost pile or bin.

Note: My specialty is working slowly, carefully, and in step with the local plants and wise women here--listening to them and the ideas they inspire as I go--and then infusing trusted, local, non-endangered Whidbey-grown plants, flowers, herbs, tree branches, and lichens (either from here at Silly Dog Studios or ethically wild gathered nearby on friends' lands and from areas on Whidbey where no spraying of poisons happens) into organic olive oil. These infused oils serve as the base for most of our products.
